Let the poet do his work
Why don’t you just let him be
Please just leave him alone
For when he’s writing he’s free.
...

I spent some time recently
In the shadow of your smile
Resting in the cool space
Between that cold shoulder
...

I think I missed the point
When night turned to day
When dark turned to light
When loneliness went away.

Fewer things in life have given me
The same pleasure as a good book
Although I’ve read some real duff ones
Not even worth a second look
...

Maybe inside you
I can find some solace
Maybe beside you
I can be at peace
...

When the moon beyond ashen clouds shows
And morning comes a calling
When the warmth of a fiery sun grows
While the night’s dew’s still a falling
...

Nothing so stirs my soul
As the sight of a blank page
Another story waiting to be told
And one in which I shall engage
...

Every time you or I
Find something to complain about
Just spare a moment’s thought
For those caught up in the drought.
...

The mist reached out from the centre of the lake
As a lover, left behind my reach out, beseeching,
Ethereal, surreal and ghostly
I thought of her, left behind at the edge of reality

Let The Poet Do His Work

Let the poet do his work
Why don’t you just let him be
Please just leave him alone
For when he’s writing he’s free.
So instead of hampering him
Why don’t you give him a hand
Watch how his mind works
It’s not hard to understand.
Don’t stand in his way
Sit down at his side
And if these words hurt
Don’t run away and hide.
Don’t skulk away by yourself
Acting like a spoilt child
Instead of getting his attention
You’ll just drive him wild.
Let the poet do his work
Why don’t you abide by his wishes
When you first got together
He never promised you great riches.
He tried to warn you in time
That he lived just to write poetry
Why after all this time
Are you beginning not to see.
Let the man write his poems
Can’t you see at least he’s trying
Writing is about all he can do
He’ll be writing when he’s dying.
So let the poet do his work
Don’t wait to hear him say
Go on be big about it
If you can’t help go away.
If you don’t believe what I say
Just look into his eyes
And see if you try to make him choose
… you lose…
Now wouldn’t that be unwise?
When he’s writing he agonises
Let his feelings rule
So let the man do his work
Go on, don’t be so cruel.
