Ignorance

I never saw
when it was right in front of me
I couldn't hear
the sobs she let out secretly
I should have known
when she closed up from everyone
but I never did-
or perhaps I did.
Somewhere inside
I did sense something was wrong
how did I manage to stay indifferent?
I am her sister.
But I didn't ask
I didn't ask because perhaps I knew
or was afraid to know
and face the truth-
the miserable horrible truth!
Such a coward I've been.
If only, I had taken that step;
If only had I heard the loud silent sobs.
what was I afraid of?
of losing my sanctuary?
The supposed 'haven'
wasn't what it seemed anyway.
She kept begging me to see
with those big eyes of hers;
but I, I didn't want to lift
the curtain of ignorance, after all
isn't it better to stay in dark sometimes
and not face the exposure of light?
that's what I thought before,
before the night she died.
