Kate More Poems

There was a small red box
with gold embellishments.
At one time it proudly held my prized possessions.
Some were scribbled on scraps of notebook paper.
...

Brown suit case in the corner:
Where have you been?
Circle around the terminal.
Hide what's within.
...

I had a three feet icicle hanging from my roof
served no purpose but to improve my view
to gauge the temperature as it dripped
to make me smile as I studied it
...

We're all animals dressed for the carnival
At the end of the day we return to our stalls.
Our trainer lives in the decorated trailer.
When you disobey he makes you feel like a failure.
...

She lays on your bed.
We walk in,
and she stares at us with those empty eyes.
We took out

The world is over,
and here we are floating in space.
Isolated in these concrete buildings
that are inexplicably suspended in the air.

Lost Poems

There was a small red box
with gold embellishments.
At one time it proudly held my prized possessions.
Some were scribbled on scraps of notebook paper.
Some were written on white paper bags.
Today I looked for that box,
but I don’t know where it went.

I searched under the bed.
Computer packaging, a coin collection
Holiday cards I meant to send
Old English papers with “A’s” on them
Newspaper clippings proclaiming achievements
But no poems.

I rummaged through my desk
Found the check book, loose change
Spare keys, stamps
Bank statements that I’d rather not look at
Cleared out the entire drawer,
Made a ghastly mess
But the box was missing
And I still had no poems.

I examined the closet.
Childhood toys filled the top shelves.
Books were stacked on a chest.
Shoes covered the floor.
Clothes hung on rods.
I looked everywhere,
But I did not find what I had lost.

Frantically, I unzipped my back pack
Saw the casebooks and the laptop
Too heavy to lift
Like the burden of career searches
and silent competitions.
Paper after paper
Flash card after flash card,
Filled with words that said absolutely nothing.

I did not find the little red box,
with gold embellishments,
But before regaining my composure, as required,
I realized exactly where
my poems went.
