Michelle Obama Stirred Something Within Me

Something stirred deep
within me
when the First Lady
took her place
next to a man
who reminded us all
that we are somebody.

We are more powerful
than the clothes we wear
or the company we keep.
We are somebody,
not just because we say it,
but because we are slowly
embracing it,
voting for people
who look more like us
than the ones
we see everyday
on network TV.

Sleep You Can'T Escape

Slipping through ridges of my tongue
like sweet-smelling margarine,
liquid pills slide down my throat,
lulling me into a sleep
I dare not revoke.
