A Single Falling Leaf

A single leaf. What an ancient sign!
Descends to earth in fluttering time.
Twisting and bending in the air;
No more summer's golden air.

The farmer hastens harvest-wise
As leaves in droves settle ground-wise.
Winter's heat must be prepared,
For cold shall come from ice and air.

Earth is gloom to those who dream
Of heights ever blissfully seen.
With envy eyes look up to sky
And flap arms like wings as if to fly.

However much the leaf does wish
To hang from Nature's precipice,
It shall shudder and so descend
To meet fellow autumn brethren.

The leaf has died yet so has it too
Joined its fellows upon forest floor.
Frost, snow, and ice are Nature's knife.
The leaf shall bear witness other life.
