Promises

Sometimes I think about forever,
and if we ever had it.
I wonder when you started to slip away,
and if it really was as quick as sand slipping through my fingertips.

Sometimes I wonder if you still think about us.
Do the empty promises fill your mind?
Does the guilt tear you apart?
Or am I just another faded memory?

Memories are all I have left of you.
I try to convince myself that they'll fix me.
But we both know I'm breaking.
And I think about how that mask of yours works wonders.

Seeing you brings back everything in a rush.
It takes me to October again,
when everything was just right.
We blasted music,
dancing on furniture like the unbroken girls we once were.

I came out when you were on the trampoline alone.
We laid on our backs and stared at the stars.
You told me how you always came out at night to look at them.
You said they were beautiful.
We talked about forever.
Who were were going to marry,
how we would always be friends.
Your mask was gone then.
It hadn't even been made.
It was just you.
Perfect you.
And me.

Sometimes I still see you.
We'll meet eyes by mistake.
You raise your hand hesitantly.
I wave back.
All I'm wondering is what's going through your mind.
And if you're going to come back,
Just like you always promised you would.
