Augosto dos Anjos

(20 April 1884 - 12 November 1914 / Pau d'Arco)

A esmola de Dulce

E todo o dia eu vou como um perdido
De dor, por entre a dolorosa estrada,
Pedir a Dulce, a minha bem amada,
A esmola dum carinho apetecido.

E ela fita-me, o olhar enlanguescido,
E eu balbucio trêmula balada:
- Senhora, dai-me u'a esmola - e estertorada
A minha voz soluça num gemido.

Morre-me a voz, e eu gemo o último harpejo,
Estendo à Dulce a mão, a fé perdida,
E dos lábios de Dulce cai um beijo.

Depois, como este beijo me consola!
Bendita seja a Dulce! A minha vida
Estava unicamente nessa esmola.

Where sunless rivers weep
Their waves into the deep,
She sleeps a charmed sleep:
Awake her not.
Led by a single star,
