Bible in Poetry: Gospel of St. Mark (Chapter 8)

  The Pharisees argued with Him
And sought of Him, a heav’nly sign;
“Why seek a sign? ” then Jesus asked.
This generation gets no sign.

By boat, He reached the other shore.
The boat had just a single loaf!
Guard against Pharisees’ leaven,
And leaven of King Herod too;
They could not comprehend a thing;
You have both eyes; yet, you can’t see!
You have good ears but cannot hear!

At Bethsaida, a blind man came;
The blind man begged of Him to touch;
Taking the man out of village,
Jesus applied spittle o’er eyes,
And asked, “Do you see anything? ”
‘I see people like walking trees! ’ the man replied.
Then Jesus laid His hands on eyes again;
His vision was fully restored;
He saw all things most distinctly!
Then Jesus said, “Don’t enter the village”.

En way to Philippi and Caesarea,
Asked Jesus, “What do people say I am? ”
“John, Elijah, prophet, ” they said.
Again He asked, “What do they say? ”
Then Peter said, “You’re Messiah! ”
He warned them not to reveal Him.

He told them that the Son of Man
Must suffer greatly and be killed,
Rejected by elders and priests and scribes,
But come alive, three days later.
Then Peter upset rebuked Him.
Jesus rebuked Peter and said,
“Satan, you think not as God does,
But just as human beings do.
Deny yourself, take up your cross
And follow me if you so wish.

Whoever saves his life still loses it;
Whoev’r should lose it for my sake,
And for the Gospel, will save his.
What profits man to gain the world
But forfeit life so precious-most?
What could one give instead of life?
Whoev’r’s ashamed of me / my words,
And leads a faithless, sinful life,
The Son of man will be ashamed
When He in Father’s glory comes.
