Bible in Poetry: Gospel of St. Mark (Chapter 9)

  “Amen, I say to you, ” he said,
“Some will not die until you see
God’s Kingdom come back in power.”
And six days later, Jesus took
James, Peter, John up a mountain;
And as they stood apart from Him,
Jesus was transfigured ‘fore them.
His clothes were dazzling white and bright;
He talked with Moses, Elijah;
Then Peter told Jesus, “Rabbi,
Good we are here, Let’s make three tents:
One for You, Moses, Elijah.”

In fear, He didn’t know what to say!
A cloud soon cast its shadow then;
A voice from it began to say:
“This is my son beloved; Listen to Him.”

While coming down the mountain slope,
He forbade them from speaking what they saw,
Until the Son of Man had ris’n from dead!
What rising from the dead meant, they didn’t know!

They asked Him why Elijah must come first?
“Indeed to restore things, ” He said.
The son of Man must suff’r greatly;
Be treated with contempt, ” He said.

On coming down, they saw the disciples,
Arguing with some scribes amidst a crowd;
On seeing Him, the crowd was so amazed;
He asked them, “What’s your argument about? ”
Someone then said, “Teacher, I’ve brought
My son possessed by mute spirit;
Whenev’r it seizes him, it throws him down;
He foams in mouth and grinds his teeth each time,
And turns rigid. I asked your disciples
To drive the spirit out, but they cannot! ”

He said, “O faithless generation, How long
Will I remain with you? How long
Must I endure? Bring him to me at once.”
He asked his father how long he was thus;
‘Since childhood, ’ he replied. It tried to kill
By throwing him into water and fire;
“If you can show compassion on him, sir! ”

But Jesus said, “All things happen by faith.”
The father of the boy’s cried, “I believe! ”
Jesus rebuked the deaf and mute spirit,
Commanding it to come out forever!
The boy convulsed and shouting, it came out;
The boy turned like a corpse. “He’s dead, ” they said.
When Jesus raised him by his hand, He stood!

His disciples asked Jesus while alone,
“Why couldn’t we drive the spirit out? ”
And Jesus said, “This comes by much prayer.”
They left for Galilee then quietly.

The Son of God will handed be to men,
Who’ll kill Him but in three days, He’ll arise! .
Afraid, they didn’t understand what He said.

At Capernaum, He asked “what’s the matter? ”
They were discussing who was the greatest.
He told, “To be the first, you must be last!
He took a child and put His arms round it.
Whoev’r receives a child in my name, he
Receives me and whoever receives me,
Receives the One who sent me to you all.

John said, “We saw someone drive out demons.”
And Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him.”
No one can do deeds mighty in my name,
And at the same time, speak ill about me.
Whoev’r is not against us is for us!

If one gives a cup of water to drink,
Because you are a Christian, then Amen,
I say to you, he will not lose reward.

Whoever leads my little ones to sin,
It would be far better for him to die,
With millstone put around his neck in sea!

If hand makes you to sin, then cut it off!
’Tis better body being maimed in life
Than two-handed get cast into the Fire!
If foot makes you to sin, then cut it off!
’Tis better crippled, you lead earthly life
Than having feet and be thrown into hell;

If eyes remain the cause of sins in life,
Just pluck them out and enter God’s Kingdom
One-eyed, than with two eyes, thrown into hell-
Where worms don’t die and fire isn’t quenched forev’r”

‘Everyone will be salted with fire;
Though salt be good, if it turns insipid,
With what can you restore its flavor back?
Keep salt in you; Be peaceful with others.
