i thank You God for most this amazing day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything wich is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today, and this is the sun's birthday;this is the birth day of life and love and wings:and of the gay great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing breathing any-lifted from the no of all nothing-human merely being doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

His words evoke not just images but remembered smells and sunshine on shoulders. How beautiful!

i think this is one of my favorite poems of all time... so stirringly beautiful, but not at all sappy

Interesting point. It could be read as a companion piece to Hopkin's Pied Beauty.. There is a choral setting of the text by Lloyd Pfautsch that I greatly admire.

Since first stumbling on the delights of cummings some 40+ years ago, I've never ceased to be amazed by how uplifting this poem is. Rightly or wrongly, I've always seen it as an homage to Manley Hopkins!
