O' My Love - Poem by Mallika Achuthan Menon

Either you stay wide awake
Or you are in the depth of sleep
No matter for me, O' my dear!
I am with you, like your own shadow
who just stick on you without any glue.

After bidding farewell to dusk heavyhearted,
Night sank on earth with no trace of glee.
There in my lap he is sleeping in peace,
Without a string of thought in his mind!

Don't beat so loud, O' my heart,
Your rhythmic beats may wake him up perhaps,
Don't you see his tranquil state?
There in my lap,
Without a string of thought in his mind!

O' moon, you look so pretty as usual,
Please do a favour for me right away,
by putting down the wick of your lamp,
if you don't mind for a while!
Or I'm afraid it will disrupt his calmness in sleep.
Don't you see that he is sleeping soundly
In my lap, without a string of thought in his mind!

With a bit of anger I warned the cuckoo once more,
For not changing her pitch to a lower note,
As it may make him restless, I thought
Because he is asleep there in my lap
Without a string of thought in his mind!

O' breeze, do come with a fan in hand,
So that you can wipe up
all beads of sweat from his forehead.
But don't sit in the window pane
To make a creaking sound aloud.
Don't you see that he is sleeping soundly,
There in my lap, without a string of thought in his mind!

I used to sing wonderful melodies
As it is my passion,
They all turned as lullabies for him
He told me this fact secretly
With his usual charming smile!
Lullabies can only travel
Upto the patio of the kip.
So at this moment I don't sing them
As he is fast asleep in my lap
Without a string of thought in his mind!

Wishes that are unfulfilled
May pop up as dreams in our conscience,
I know your mind very well dear....
And your depth of despair more than you!
O' dreams, don't enter in his realm of sleep,
There in my lap, he is sleeping
Without a string of thought in his mind!

When this universe slept with all contentment
in the velvet blanket of night,
A set of stars who stood in the sky
gave a smile and winked at me,
As if they all knew the sacred love,
in between us O' my love....
