Toe To Toe

I am in the windy city and stuck late here in the gym once again
All alone with one light on and it keeps the courts real dim
I was just sitting there practicing on my jump shot
With a brand new Spalding basketball that I had just bought
When all the sudden across the courts I hear the door open and close
And all I heard was footsteps so I stopped and I froze
Straining my eyes so that just maybe I could see
How did I know that this wasn't a killer coming for me
I stood up strait and said through my chest
Who is that and have you come to challenge the best
He just replied with laughter right before appearing
He was tall and all I saw was one hoop earring
Oh snap could it be? Yes I think it is MJ
He was in his jersey and looked like he came to play
All he did was walk strait to the top of the key
I checked the ball and then he just rolled it to my feet
Am I a joke does this guy think he's being funny
So I threw up a three and then shouted out 'money'
it went through the air then all you heard was net
Michael just looked, smiled and said aight bet
So MJ grabbed the ball and took it from the top
I knew that all I needed was a defensive stop
So I played him close as he drove down the lane
Next thing I know he yaked it all in my face mayne
Just like him I played with some good sportsmanship
I said okay you caught me where I usually don't slip
I checked the ball again and all I did was give a shake and bake
He fell for it so I broke left real quick after the fake
I had a clear path to the basket and put MJ in a daze
Rattled the rim with a three sixty dunk that went between the legs
Jordan raised his eyebrows and said not bad for a kid
You lucky I hit this sweat spot and my foot just slid
I said uh huh sure…. excuses excuses
Your about to find out I'm the one that never loses
He gave the ball to me and I checked it right back
So I went and launched my defensive attack
He immediately started to pull up from behind the arc
I thought oh this block should be a walk in the park
But it was a pump fake and I fell right for it
He drained a three like it wasn't shit
I said okay game point next made shot is the winner
That's when I thought, let's make the stakes a lil thicker
How about we bet and each pull two things out our hats
How bout I my Cadillac Deville for your charlotte bobcats
He laughed and said alright your on and shook my hand
I said I hope you ready for this storm you have to withstand
Paused for just a second I broke hard to the right
I tried to get in the lane but his defense was too tight
so I stopped and turned around hoping his D I could break down
he was good he just adap-ted so on my foot I pivo-ted
I jumped and faded away whispering its going in I pray
That's when hit the back of the rim then it dropped in
I had some perfect aim So I shouted out game

poet Percy Bysshe Shelley

We are as clouds that veil the midnight moon;
How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver,
Streaking the darkness radiantly!--yet soon
