Remember - Poem by Christina Georgina Rossetti

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

    This poem is one that I find nearly perfect. The poetic language is precise without being pedantic, the rhyme scheme is subtle and effective, and does not take away from the natural flow of the poem, but instead is something that one needs to be gently reminded of between the beauty of the words. The time phrasing and length of each line, pouring into the stanza is subtly attached enough to read not only as an individual line, but as a part of a sentence, which when coupled with rhyme and meter is a difficult task to obtain, much less master as effortlessly as Rossetti.
    But the true beauty in this poem is its ability to be read multiple times. While many poems are read like a wine, savored best in tastings with time to savor between consumptions, Rossetti's Remember reads like water, and I rarely find myself reading it less than once in a single sitting: however long it may be between sittings. The emotion behind the poem, its bittersweet evolution of phrases seem both hopefully and perilous, a fighting for optimism against inevitability. It shines like a human face, searching the dark corners for light, and finding it when it is not there.
    But perhaps the most beautiful part about this poem is that it is not overdone. Whereas other masters Angelou, Hughes, Kipling, Frost and Shakespeare are brought out constantly and reliably, Rossetti only sees the light of day when it is most perfectly appropriate. Like a favorite book, it is not overused, but never overlooked. (Report) Reply

    Do we take time to remember those salient moments that have characterised our lives? This poems echoes that, the power of remembrance. (Report) Reply
