The Hunt

Skin and muscle flowing
like water over rock
foot falls falling silently
Quiet! Quiet!
Quiet now they must not hear!
moon above watching
watching helplessly
at her children
hunger, hunger
hunger as endless as space
shoulder blades rolling
running in a crouch
elbows bent
head heald low
claws partially extended for better traction
at last!
a sent upon the ground!
picking up the pace
tail keeping me balanced
over shrubs
under branches
ducking below vines
leaping over fallen trees
Quick! Quick!
find it before it gets away!
my sharp ears hear a breeze comming
i freeze for a moment
waiting for it to reach me
a strong gale rushes past
a glimpse of the prey!
tail heald high
a flag of surrender
easy prey
easy dinner
i leap
as effortless as breathing
claws fully extended now
jaws gaping wide
my midnight fur hides me
cold stars wink in approval
and my eyes promice eternal rest
landing on the stags back
i bite deep
my prey goes down without a fight
all of nature seems to halt
stars stop their dancing
trees stop their swaying
all marveling
at my beauty and grace
i throw back my head
and pay tribute to my dead
your death is my life i say
thank you
i roar
singing to my moon mother
thank you for life
thank you for breath
but why must others sacrifice themselves for me?
