Takin' Notice

She stands at the mirror
I see what she cannot
She never sees
The wonder of her eyes

Mascara and liner
Applied with care
Beauty unnoticed
As she toils

Effort wasted,
Never needed
She reaches for the brush
Tousled tawny tresses

Beyond the need of attention
They're meant to lie
In tangles
On satin pillows

A film of dew
From the effort of satisfying
That most elemental of needs
They glisten in the morning sun

She walks with purpose
To choose a gown
Or shift
Or slacks

Jeans will do
They mold to her in just the right way
She won't believe it
But still they look to be painted on

Satin blouses be damned
She picks the Tee.
Well done
Mountains and valleys
All in order.

Ready now
She turns and looks to see me ready
But not to leave the room.
We'll dine in tonight
