Drowning

Water drops all around me, forming an infinite ocean.
Each dropp is a fear, a scar, an ache, my heart torn wide open.
Each fake smile is a gasp for air; a desperate and pitiful attempt to survive.
How can I move on? How can I forget? This can’t be my life.

I’m drowning in memories.
I’m drowning in broken promises.
I’m drowning in questions of why this happened to us.
We used to be so strong.
We used to be unshakable.
Where did we go wrong?
Where can we go to make all of this forgettable?
If leaving us behind means sailing away, then I’d rather just drown and stay.

The waters rise as the tears keep flowing from my eyes,
But how can I stop them when I’m so paralyzed?
This is the last thing I expected,
You turned my hopes and dreams into a future that is rejected.

I’m drowning in dreams of my wedding day and dreams of my children,
Those dreams are forever changed; you changed me with them.
I’m drowning in constant reminders of a love gone wrong,
Will I ever be able to love again, now that yours is gone?
If leaving us behind means sailing away, then I’d rather just drown and stay.

People say this is my reality and I have to accept it,
And that one day things will be okay and that I’ll get through this.
But their words are void, and the ocean keeps rising.
I take my last breath and I stop my fighting.

I’m drowning in us.
I’m drowning in but what ifs.
But what if we could have saved this?
But what if we could have overcome it?
I’m drowning in life, in all of its cruelty.
I’m drowning in forever, and all of the lies it told me.
The ship is above me, trying to reach me.
People I love, who want to save me.
But if leaving us behind means sailing away,
then I’d rather just drown and stay.
