without feeling my heart jump

without my breath hitching

She told another joke, we all laughed
Another screamed as a balloon popped
Then laughter permeates the air
once more

I look down from my position at the top of the lift.
Down into the depths of darkness,
Where many workers make their wage.
The layers of silica dust that coat the equipment

She passes a street lamp
Which casts her shadow into a dodgy alley.
Yet the next has been shattered,
‘broken-down’ like so many others.

“In Life, the Trials hit us hard.
We spend our lives just trying to prove ourselves,
sometimes for so long that we just pass by on all the small things.
Life is filled with challenges.

You used to brave the world, all on your own
You used stand by me, my sturdy wall
You used to hold me as I cried, my faithful shoulder
You used to be at my side, every step of the way

I didn't choose to shave my hair,
I lost it.
I didn't choose to be so weak that I couldn't play,
I literally couldn't move.

I’m so scared that I will never know you
I’m terrified that the future that I dream about:
the dreams that I have, the picture in my head;
May never come true
...

I stand here, in a crowded room
My friend to my left and an enemy on my right.
I'm bumped, prodded and elbowed
A member of this herd, treated like a beast.

He approaches, with all the airs
of good social graces
Head held high and the manners
of respectful breeding.
