The periwinkle petals closed
As daylight turned to dark-
And nighttime fell like dampened silk
To hush the meadowlark.

Was alone with just my soul-
Seems the truth it had no place to hide,

A fairytale recited still
For T is mankind's wish,

My hair's as the chestnut,
My eyes, china blue;
To a radish I'm ancient,
To a tree scarcely new.

An angel may be weeping
For I felt a tear- or two,
But the clouds they do conceal her
Hidden safely from my view.

I loved a lifetime in a year,
What's left of it? A smile- a tear.
I keep them safely locked away
Where the angels waltz and the poets play.

A candle shortened by the years,
Its beads of wax, like streaks of tears;

The shady wood I came upon
Was so adequately blessed,
I determined I would tarry there,
If only for a rest.

There is no quiet such as this,
At least none that I know-
Like moonlight on a downy drift,
So fell those flakes of snow.
