04 When I Die Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

04 When I Die

Rating: 4.9

'Vinaa dainyena Jeevitam
Anaayasena maranam'
what the ascetics of the yore
In India dreamt of, always.

Not all lived thus
And not all died thus.
But they did pray thus
For His benevolence.

I pray to Him for a life
devoid of miseries
And a death with ease,
May He grant me thus.

When I die I would,
if my daughter beloved
Lights my pyre
Not anyone else.

And I would ask her
Not to mourn my death,
That no rituals to follow,
Never ever remember me,

For I have lived an
Ordinary life,
Done nothing to be
Remembered for.

Death should put
A mundane end
To my mundane life
That grabbed at nothing.

All religions practice a lot of funeral and post-mortem rituals. And some annual repetitive rituals too. I don't believe in any of them. Once dead, one is dead and gone. Nothing remains. No soul, no punarjanmam (re-birth) .. Nothing!

That's true selflessness. You will always be remembered by those who read your writings. But then even I wish my kids don't think of me often if I die. They should be happy always.Just on ocassions is enough.

Death is a full stop. Not a comma or a semicolon. So, there it should end.
