A bainha do punhal

Salve, noites do Oriente,

Noites de beijos e amor!

Onde os astros são abelhas

Do éter na larga flor...

Onde pende a meiga lua,

Como cimitarra nua

Por sobre um dólmã azul!

E a vaga dos Dardanelos

Beija, em lascivos anelos

As saudades de 'Stambul.

Salve, serralhos severos

Como a barba dum Paxá!

Zimbórios, que fingem crí¢nios

Dos crentes fiéis de Alá! ...

Ciprestes que o vento agita,

Como flechas de Mesquita

Esguios, longos também;

Minaretes, entre bosques!

Palmeiras, entre os quiosques!

Mulheres nuas do Harém!.

Mas embalde a lua inclina

As loiras tranças pra o chão

Desprezada concubina,

Já não te adora o sultão!

Debalde, aos vidros pintados,

Aos balcíµes arabescados,

Vais bater em doudo afã...

Soam tímbalos na sala...

E a dança ardente resvala

Sobre os tapetes do Irã!...
