Forever is such a foolish word,
To its promise we're held like a slave,
And what of love that's vowed forever?
Defeated, it limps to an early grave
Without shame, forever deceives us,
For what it vows, it can't deliver,
Like a stream that can't float a dried leaf,
Yet, it boasts like a mighty river
Yes, forever is a finite word
Eternity must find amusing,
Just a lie wrapped in timeworn phrases
We mortals delight in abusing
Forever provokes reality
With all its prowess and good intent,
But only fools believe forever,
And soon discover its value spent
Yet, we need forever in our lives,
This word, uttered with brave endeavor,
Providing light in our darkest hours,
May it bestow its hope..... forever!
A thought provoking poem, Lora, well presented. The rhyming sequence makes this poem, as with all your poems, so easy to read. Lies, broken promises, deceit seems to be destroying the very social fabric that we all should value. Deceit today is like a destructive pandemic disease, it destroys lives. A single decision made, based on a lie told you by someone you trust, can adversely affect one's life. I think your poem highlights this.
for- eve-r... maybe that's what they meant when they started using those words.. but what is r maybe remember so it would be for-eve-remember , , , very nice poem I like it.

I agree with you, forever is such a farce...but still we tend to believe in this " foolish word" . Last two stanzas are my favorites.
