A Kindness Paid Poem by Brian Rihlmann

A Kindness Paid

You didn't say,
"Never again! "
but,
"Maybe someday..."

Then, you vanished,
a misty rainbow
shimmering in your wake.

Those verbal scraps
echoing in my beggar's ears.

A kindness you paid
that I've kept
for the many years
since I've heard your voice.

I carry it in my pocket
like a blank lotto ticket,
worn out from checking.
