A Knocknagree Rose Poem by Francis Duggan

A Knocknagree Rose

The bigger World out there she yearned for to see
She would not spend her lifetime in green Knocknagree
When the hawthorns were cloaked in their blossoms of pale gray
She left home on a Spring morning in early May

On a taxi that took her to meet the train at Rathmore
At the start of her journey to a distant shore
In her early twenties close to her physical prime
Full of youthful enthuasism on the right side of time

With dark wavy hair to her shoulders and eyes of light brown
The pride of the dance halls in Rathmore and Millstreet Town
Back when she was younger five decades or so
And on going back in time that does seem long ago

Her journey took her to London though i heard one who knew her say
That from there she went to live in the U S of A
In her younger years quite a beauty a Knocknagree Rose
To time she would have lost some of her beauty one would have to suppose.
