A Living Metaphor Poem by Raymond Farrell

A Living Metaphor

Once the Don River
And all the rivers
Flowing into Lake Ontario
Near Toronto
Teemed with salmon
So abundantly
The jail guards
Fed them to the prisoners
In the Don Jail
Day after day
Until they complained
About it
And yet this past Fall
After repeat trips
Up and down the Don River
I saw less than 20 salmon
Making their way
Upriver
To spawn.
