A Toast To You

The wedding bells clanged in the background
the roses lined the ground leading to you
as I awoke I found myself still there
the whiskey still fumed from my mouth
the bells still played in my head over and over
like the sound of the bartender asking me to leave
friends nowhere to be seen in this place
just another memory of you to live by
someone played “Songs About Rain” for me
to remind me that you were with your husband
that I was alone again in the dark of the bar
So I raise my glass to you sweet angel of death
Proposing that the chains of marriage hold you forever
Because the hole you left in my heart will never better

Poem of the Day

poet Robert William Service

Three times I had the lust to kill,
To clutch a throat so young and fair,
And squeeze with all my might until
No breath of being lingered there.
Three times I drove the demon out,
