When young a boy, I had just attained age,
And read of wine, women, sex in a rage,
And drugs of addiction that filled a page,
Decided to give up being a sage,
One day, I heard the shocking AIDS message!
My tragic story, I must surely tell –
A victim of H.I.V., I befell,
Life’s glamour simply vanished in a trice,
‘There wasn’t escape’, I came to realise,
For it was late and too grim was the vice!
A.I.D.S. is but a recent scourge,
Wiping mankind all o’er the earth,
A wrath of the Maker, some do say
To free the world of men from their sinful ways,
And making him anew by this purge!
The Retro-virus enters white cells,
Proliferating in the nucleus,
Using the reverse transcriptase,
Entering genome of new host cells,
Throwing out of gear, the body’s defence!
It spreads not just by unsafe sex,
By infected tissues, blood to vex,
By needle-stick poking health-carers,
By sharing needles by drug-abusers:
Results are tragic –however!
It spares no one both young and old,
Or children born to mothers ‘bold’
Stealing the nations’ middle-aged folks,
Leaving behind scars eyes tears-soaked,
Much misery and many broken homes!
Death is the end to most men alike,
By tumours, infections and the like,
They melt like a candle in the wind
Unable to plug the aboral end,
With drugs all failing to defend!
Despite all treatments, despite care,
A downhill course, the victim does fare,
Long span of life is very rare,
Though philanthropists do money spare,
The victim finally does stare!
Will man correct his abnormal sex-ways?
Could God be kinder to the human race?
Can future victims have much better days?
May God help scientists cure every case!
O God, do end this treacherous pace!
