An Ordinary Fellow Poem by Francis Duggan

An Ordinary Fellow

He helps his neighbours if help they are needing
And disrespect to any he doesn't show
And though since his birth he has lived in the district
He is a man not many people know.

Many who have lived here for a few years known far better
Though they are not as generous or kind
Suppose he is one who keeps a low profile
Still men like him are rare and hard to find.

He is not a member of the Bowls or Golf Club
And he's not a member of any committee
Just an ageing man who likes to tend his garden
And a lover of the coastlands and the sea.

Some well may say an ordinary fellow
Those whose opinions should not hold much weight
He is not a socialite or social climber
Yet in his own right he is surely great.

He is always willing to help out his neighbour
When his neighbour is in need of a hand
Yet many far less helpful known far better
That's something I find hard to understand.

One don't have to look too far to find an unsung hero
There's one who lives on the next street to me
And he's seen as an ordinary fellow
Yet about him there is nothing ordinary.
