Autumn Is Deep Upon Us Poem by Deanna Samuels

Autumn Is Deep Upon Us

There is no doubt about it,
Autumn is deep upon us
Orange, reds and yellows
And gold, yes gold
The shimmering gold dress of foliage
Glows with aloofness, pride
Outshining its woody competitors
In their glorious autumn tones

Autumn is deep upon us
Fully fleshed pumpkins at peak of season
Bright orange of every size imaginable
From hand held to a complete arms circle
Pumpkin Pie, a speciality at this time
Baked to perfection with aromatic sweet spices
Each warmed slice a delectable mouthful
Served with whipped cream, just melts in the mouth

Autumn is deep upon us
Pumpkins by the millions are carefully hollowed out
Carved with frightening ugly faces
Made more fearsome with lighted candle within
Ready for Halloween
Placed on porch steps and garden lawns
Surrounded by cob webs, spiders and coffins
Waiting to surprise the trick or treat visitors

Autumn is deep upon us
A countless array of Halloween treats
Chocolate bars and candy galore for kids to eat
Frightening dress-up costumes from ghosts to witches
Spacemen, pirates, Superman, Batman, every creative garb
Excited children and even grown-ups
Knocking on doors proudly display their outfits
Claiming lots of assorted sugary treats
A sack worth to last for weeks and weeks

Autumn is deep upon us
Farmers busy ploughing-in their spent summer crop
Preparing the fields for the next Spring growth
Awaiting the winter snow to cover the land
With later melt to water and soften the fertile loam
Dairy herds put out to munch the succulent soft grasses
Last few weeks before being confined to winter sheds
Horses too, canter and frolic before being stabled

Autumn is deep upon us
Summer bird visitors have flown their nests
Away to warm climes, escaping the on-coming cold months
Ground Squirrels have busily collected winter supplies
Burying in ground or tree trunk gaps for spring awakening
Tree squirrels, foxes, raccoons and similar, burrow down
Though each day, venture into human habitat for food
Larger wildlife feast heartily, prepare for lean months ahead
Bears hibernate, eat fish, small mammals, berries to sustain

Autumn is deep upon us
People are preparing for the winter months
Bring out the snow blowers and wide deep snow shovels
Out come too, the ice skates and sleds, snowmobiles and skis
Boots, winter sweaters and warm coat apparel
Scarves, hats, gloves and ear muffs to combat the icy cold
Furnace and filter checks, final garden clean-up
Scramble to arrange change for winter tires and servicing car

Autumn is deep upon us
Shops already display lots of Christmas gifts
Windows are glittering with festive décor
Delectable seasonal foods to excite the taste buds
Chocolate extravaganzas, marzipan fruit cakes, stollens
Santa Clause, reindeer and sleighs full of toys
Children peering with awe, looking in, dreaming
Dreaming of what is yet to come, will they get their wish

Yes, autumn is deep upon us
Deep upon us before the cold winter months set in
