Bees

  Our friend the bee
pollinates the flowers,
come flaming June or April showers
the pears and the berries,
anything we can chew;
apples and cherries,
runner beans, too.

Unpaid workers
in the orchard of life
and dying by the fistful...
there is sadness in the hive,
and all of us will suffer
if they fail to survive.

One reason is a leeching mite
a blood-sucking parasite,
like a dirty syringe
spreading H.I.V.
activating viruses
which bee gives to bee…

World governments know…
So what will they do?
The same as they did
when global warming
was new
way back when…
so, let me see…
that will be nothing, then…

Oh, they can find billions
to fund illegal wars
and ailing economies
on foreign shores
but no aid will come
for the humble bee…
or a solitary industrious bumblebee

and these beautiful providers of food
– not just honey –
will ultimately perish for
‘lack of money’.
And make no mistake…
So will we,
should they allow the death
of our friend, the bee
