You lie curled
a small canoe
in calm waters
before the rapids come
a wide calm
luminosity of sound
currents all round
drifting towards the first spasms
of wild water
buffeted tiny craft
that gushes out
into rushings of whitewater light
you emerge – a diver
from great depths –
covered still
for a moment in darkness
short of breath
splashing for air
struggling for the shore
so near, so far.
