Bold And Self-Sufficient Poem by Hans Raj Sharma

Bold And Self-Sufficient

A perpetual battle between man and woman
Seeking dominance over or a perfect balance
Harping on the quality of their sex-
And roles complimentary, not supplementary.

A perfect balance, as harmony in Nature
Performing different types of functions
Each holding a unique status and position
In the cosmological order.

Woman, a manifestation of universal mother
Undergoing the ordeals of maternity-
And daunting problems nurturing her children.

Combines in her, purity of Sita and Damyanti-
Saintly temper of Vachaknavi and Vishavavara
The intellectual acumen of Gargi and Sulbha
And spiritual powers of Savitri and Anusuya
Physical strength and courage of Lakshmi Bai.

Regrettably, she is trained in helplessness
Servile dependence on others as such-
Being very good only to weep her eyes
At the slightest approach of any mishap
Instead of becoming bold and self-sufficient.
