Broken Poem by Fergal Dunne

Broken

He danced in your tears
Like a little boy in the summer rain.
He did it,
Because
You let him.
Feeling numb now
Like before the doctor came.
Hoping to answer correctly.

You took another line
Because you wanted to escape the pain.
You did it,
Because
No one said no.
You were smiling now
Like a little child
Who got the good present.

When he struck out
Spinning like a fly without wings,
You fell down.
You didn’t understand this thing
But you forgave him.
No marks this time.

You cooked the evening meal
Because he was hungry.
You did it
Because,
You always do.
You were broken now
Like burnt embers,
Ready for the bin.
