Can The Dead Hear? Poem by Juan Olivarez

Can The Dead Hear?

Have you ever wondered if the dead can hear,
If they can laugh, or smile, maybe shed a tear?
Have you ever wondered if the dead can see,
If they still are Earthbound and never set free?

Have you ever wondered why the hair on your nape,
Will oft times stand on end, begging for escape?
From a darkened doorway, or a moonless night,
But your feet won't move they hold fast and tight?

Have you ever wondered what is all around,
Walking by the graveyard, staring at the ground?
Have you hurried your pace and whistled a while,
Hearing the wind moan, did you try to smile?

Have you ever wondered, if the dead aren't gone,
If they're out there waiting feeling all alone?
And maybe a small prayer would ease their grief,
Then some wondering soul, would feel relief.
