Casterton's Kelpie Auction Poem by Francis Duggan

Casterton's Kelpie Auction

In Casterton at the kelpie working dog auction the auctioneer's gavel rose and fell
At five thousand four hundred for the top dog good dogs not hard to sell
The first Kelpies were bred by Jack Gleeson from a pup he bought in Casterton Town
At sheep mustering and penning the kelpies know renown,
In Casterton they have their Kelpie Muster in June of every year
And people come for the three day festival from places far and near
Jack Gleeson's first ever kelpie pup brought to Casterton fame
And as for the founder of the breed his became a renowned name
To Casterton for the Kelpie sale buyers come from places far and wide
And breeders of the Kelpie dogs in their canines take pride,
Prior to auction the dogs can be seen working sheep the best work dogs fetch the highest price
Of the best of Australia's Kelpie breed the buyers have the choice
Of Jack Gleeson the founder of the Kelpie breed great stories have been told
And in Casterton's Kelpie auction every year great dogs are bought and sold.
