Coconut Trees Poem by Lohi Lohian

Coconut Trees

Coconut trees were there
when I saw, they disappeared
with all those crows and squirrels.

There should have been
some signs of neat dropletsand dew
from the leaves of coconut trees
on my courtyard, at least, a falling
of small smooth baby coconuts.

They were umbrellas spread
just below the clouds that made
blue patches among green shades.

My mother opens stony dried shells
with long necked knife
that hooded and hissed like a snake,
Hundreds of eyes opened on her bare back
where the sun reflected in black.

The coconut trees were erected to the sky
before my birth, they shielded us
from the disastrous spell of heaven
