Dazzling Darkness Poem by Nosheen Irfan

Dazzling Darkness

Rating: 5.0

A dazzling darkness descended
Aghast, open-mouthed wonder
And a surge of rustic blood
The fireworks, like never before
The village sky patterned by colors
Down on the soil of labor
Stood all the clueless heads
A display unimagined by ignorance
Spied with childish amazement
The landlord on his steed swelled
His pride not to be quelled
The world must thunder and burst
Like his happiness did
A man winning a diamond
Though fret and fuss his wives must
The new bride his home must see
A custom his forefathers cherished
At 50, a girl of 16
He found, by his wealth and means.

Very powerful and well written. It always astounds modern sensibilities when we see the abuse involved in ancient customs. I like to dream that the human race will overcome its brutal nature but I am pessimistic. This is a great poem Nosheen.

Again, the poem, the words, the imagery and the emotional make-up are hauntingly exquisite. Nosheen, your protest against a vice in the society of the Indian sub-continent, which is still prevalent in a few segments, hits hard on the reader. Congrats.

I really liked, nope, loved the imagery you had used in the beginning of the poem! It can suggest the omen of the stormy weather - a future that awaits the child bride; on the other hand it also shows the 'mad joy' that the landlord is having at having his wish being fulfilled due to his financial power. To speak a bit more on this - one of the subjects upon which I have an incredible ammount of passion is gender equality.. It is shameful to think that people could claim that they 'buy' the bride for some money or power.. It is as if she is just an object.. And despite we might have come a long way from the fuedalistic structure, the democratic society too had failed the women, with child marrriage is still found in some places.. I thank you for raising this issue Nosheen.. May this darkness disappear one day, with some sense coming within the horrible people and society at large.. Thank you...

I can't help but wonder what spurred on such a writing. Where or what inspired this tale of injustice. The world must thunder and burst. I know that the steed and the village scene seem to portray some by-gone age and yet even now through means of military overlords certain parts of the globe still have these domineering figures, even in this modern time such barbarity exists. A wonderful writing fully illustrating this ignorance and power.

It still happens in the feudal class in the countries where polygamy is a tradition. A drama serial on village feudal class on our tv channel inspired me to write this.Though its been quite some time since it was aired, but it had quite an impact due to its realistic portrayal of the ignorance prevalent in villages.

Age old customs still roaring at it's peak engulfing all those innocent souls into the quicksand of wealth. Wish things change, wish girls are given the right to education and how I wish a girls learns to say NO to the atrocities of this society. Thought provoking poem.10+++

A truth prevailing in society is well exposed. All wish come true with abundance wealth and innocents are trapped in the net of money. Gone are those days when the wish of a 16 years old used to be honored. Lust and power have taken-over the law of nature and purpose of life on earth, A thought provoking poem, indeed.....10+++++
