Dear Mama, Can We Talk? Poem by Asaolu Abayomi

Dear Mama, Can We Talk?

Dear mama
Can we talk?
I have a lot to ask
Can you answer?
Dear mama can I knock?
When I knock
Will you open?
If you open
will you give audience?
If you give audience
Will you tell me?

Long ago,
When you haven't gone beneath
I saw you wear your trouser
I saw you wear your boots
I saw you hold the sword
I saw you head to the war
I never feared you'll be wounded
Because you were strong and brave
How did you end up here?
A decade and a half
Have I asked your shadow
But mum kept mum

Dear Mama,
I tried to be him
I want to be him
I am doing all to be him
But I have not been him
Yes I know you want it
Yet you couldn't say how
I know how uncomfortable
Your room beneath may be
I know you are here
But you wouldn't answer
I know you see my tears
I know you see my flaws
I know you see me fading
I know you want to help
But why can't you help

Dear mama, can we talk?
Dear mama, do you know?
Dear mama, am I lost?
Dear mama, please talk to me
Dear mama, if you know
Dear mama, please tell me
If only I can be that son you wanted
At least smile from the world beyond
Dear mama, let's talk now
Dear mama, can we talk now?
