I went to a party, mom, I remember what you said.
You told me not to drink, mom, so I drank soda instead.
I really felt proud inside, mom, even though the others said I should.
I know I did the right thing, mom, I know you are always right.
Now the party is finally ending, mom, as everyone is driving out of site.
As I got into my car, mom, I knew I would get home in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me, mom, so responsible and sweet.
I stared to drive away, mom, but I pulled out into the road,
The other car didn’t see me, mom, and hit me like a load.
As I lay here on the payment, mom, I hear the policeman say,
The other guy is drunk, mom, and now I’m the one who will pay.
I’m lying here dying, mom, I wish you’d get here soon.
How could this happen to me, mom? My life just burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me, mom, and most of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, mom, I’ll die in a short time.
I just wanted to tell you, mom, I swear I didn’t drink.
It was the others, mom. The others didn’t think.
He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is, he drank and I will die.
Why do people drink, mom? It can ruin your whole life.
I’m feeling sharp pains now, mom, pains just like a knife.
The guy that hit me is walking, mom, I don’t think it is fair.
I’m lying here dying, mom, and all he can do is stare.
Tell my brother not to cry, mom, tell daddy to be brave.
And when I go to haven, mom, put “daddy’s girl” on my grave.
Someone should have told him, mom, not to drink and drive.
If only they had told him, mom, I would still be alive.
My breath is getting short, mom, I’m becoming very scared.
Please don’t cry for me, mom. When I need you, you were always there.
I have one last question, mom, before I say good bye.
I didn’t drink and drive, mom, so why am I the one to die?

Anyone who says they wrote this except Melissa Ball, is not telling the truth. The ORIGINAL TITLE OF THIS POEM is SO WHY AM I TO DIE? This was first done in June of 1994,16 years ago. People have changed the words around and titled it different. The Original again is;
SO WHY AM I TO DIE?
Mrs. Doebler, myself and Melissa and her grandpa and grandma know the truth and God! ! !

I am Melissa's mom and she wrote this when she was 14 1/2 years old it was a school poem assignment in Mrs Doeblers class at Mesa Jr High School. She brought it home and said mom read my poem as I read on I had tears coming down my face and I said 'Melissa' what made you write this, my daughter said it was an assignment and she had gotten an A on it. We know the truth on this she wrote this from an article in a newspaper. She has always been brilliant with her work and real good with everything she does and I do pray it does help people and I do know it has helped MADD mothers against drunk drivers. Thank you God for sending my Melissa to me.

Yes, I did write this I have the original copy written version and it was written in 1994 I was 14 @ the time. If you have any questions or comments on this please feel free to email me. There are so many of you that are trying to take credit for this why? For one the title is 'So Why Am I To Die? ' If you really read it that is what she saying it is about a real story. What upsets me the most is it was one of my friends she was 16 her name was Natalie, her cross were she died is placed on the side of the freeway between mojave and rosemond. Instead of people being so selfcentered think of others and if you live close by pay her your respects. Please. Rest in peace Natalie.

i think i first read this poem last year
my friend had introduced it to me, but i was lik, thats a good poem but i ddnt
read it all.
then a month ago she showed it to me again
and i actually read it and this is the best poem
ive ever read-really! !

i'm REALLY hoping that you'll know the answer to this question....where did you get this? i wrote it a couple years ago on this online poetry contest thing, and then next thing i know it everywhere! ! ! its not called 'death of an innocent' its 'mom i'm really sorry' but if you got it from a friend, ask that friend. please, its very important that i find out why on earth they didn't copyright it so this didn't happen in the first place. thank you! !
