Debauchery And Such

Rating: 5.0

By Josh Rodriguez

Dear everyone,
I almost died last night—
Too much life is a dangerous thing.
I woke up like a newborn.
Dumb, unaware.
The hospital was comfortable.
The doctors were courteous.
The bed was disgusting,
My clothes were wrecked—
Like the human condition.
Everyone tells me I’m lucky.
The magnitude of the situation
Is touch and go.
It doesn’t set,
It’s a marauding fog.
A cop saw me.
Body functions shutting down and all.
He was kind enough to fine me and be on his way.
No call to an ambulance,
No call for help,
He was a c*nt.
If I died his conscious would weigh
Heavy as the the world's conscious,
Heavy as the universe.
We don't pay our conscious mind when we act,
Though.
If we did we would be in a different place—
For better or worst.
My mother was near tears when I called.
I could hear it in her voice.
She was worried,
She was saddened by her incapacity
To do anything.
I don’t understand why someone would
Worry about something that they don’t need to.
I’m fine. I love her dearly,
Like an addict loves their vice—
Everyone has a vice.
It’s a shame I could do that.
It pulls at my heart.
My dad is a man.
A man of the military, more importantly.
He was worried. I was sorry.
His eyes said more than his mouth.
As the doctors feigned concern
They calculated the bill.
The payment is of high important to the doctors,
Doctors place high importance on the payment.
Philanthropy is a myth.
There’s no such thing as goodness of the heart,
Just the goodness of self-benefit.
