Distance Poem by Kris Whelan (1971)

Distance

There was no hidden message I threw it in the sea of love
But you answered me somehow and I always guessed you would
We were reaching outwards not knowing what to find
Grasping through the darkness trying to find our kind

The ebb and flow of tide and time, I never thought could change
The path of least resistance, now there's only distance

We were standing on the boardwalk the water deep and clear
And you answered all my questions and realised my fears
Forever reaching outwards not knowing what to find
The water clear but cold, we both went beneath it blind
And the sea of love’s torrential at this time of year
And I thought we were forever but now I’m standing here
Across the oceans wide and I know you feel the same
Don’t you try to hide it and don’t you take the blame
We’re both grasping in the darkness, trying to fight our dreams
Listening to the floods come down and nothing seems the same
But still I try to find you and it’s not a waste of time
No matter what they think and say we were always in line
Is the music gone forever? Well I certainly don’t agree
And I know it’s not your point of view but they’re too blind to see
We may have took the wrong road but the path of least resistance
And I’d dearly like to reach you but now there’s only distance
