Don'T Try To Fix Me Poem by Keli Mims

Don'T Try To Fix Me

I was born like this, this way,
Being ignored and unseen everyday.
Because I can't do stuff like you,
Because I don't have two legs like you do.
I'm diffrent, confined to this wheel chair,
20 and wrinkles spell out every care.
You pass me and your eyes don't meet mine,
Or when I try to talk you don't have any time.
This is who I am and it's not good enough,
I don't understand why I am shown no love.

Wondering if anyone will see,
I'm not broken so don't try to fix me.

I lost my wife and two little girls,
One fire left me lost without my world.
They're all I had and now I'm left alone,
Lost my job and almost my home.
Dropped my cans and left my beer,
I place a smile smile and hide any tear.
I walk with a broken hearted stride,
But my depression is one thing I can't hide.
As time goes on everyone forgets but me,
When I want to talk no ones here by me.

Wondering if anyone will see,
I'm not broken so don't try to fix me.

I don't talk quite right and I stutter,
So I stay silent and just barely mutter.
My face is a little distorted and diffrent,
One arm is crooked and the other is bent.
You pass me without a passing glance,
If someone would just give me a chance.
I wouldn't car if you only stared,
I just want someone to show they care.
Being teased and made fun of I feel unloved,
I'm left out because you feel I can't do enough.

Wondering if anyone will see,
I'm not broken so don't try and fix me.

I'm a girl without the ability of sight,
Unlike a sickness this I can't fight.
People see my glazed over stare,
And that's when they loose all care.
They offer new eyes to 'help' me,
But why can't they just let me be?
I don't need sight to live my life,
I've gone all my years without sight.
My white cane scares people away,
No one knows what I go through every day.

Wondering if anyone will see,
I'm not broken so don't try to fix me.

I can't speak and haven't spoken in years,
And I'm also deaf, I cannot hear.
You speak and assume I do too,
I can't even tell you I didn't hear you.
My mouth moves buit words don't come,
You tell me with 'help' I can hear some.
I don't need a hearing aid to continue life,
I can't speak or hear but I have sight.
I don't need your 'help' just use your hands,
I can sign and that's how I understand.

We were meant to be this way,
To face these challenges each day.
We don't want to be just like you,
You aren't perfect in all you do.
I wonder if anyone will see,
And just let me be,
I'm not broken so don't try to fix me.
