Donal Poem by Charlotte Peters Rock

Donal

Donal's hollow eyes
dark above his sharpened bony cheeks
will haunt me long beyond his living

He worked his father's fields
until his knees gave out
His daughter died in hunger

eating sweetness rot
he brought to keep her strong
from praties liquid in the ground

His son gave in and left
The boat removed him
from his land forever

And Donal died inside
to lose the mother ground
his father left him
