Drowning Poem by Megan Loney

Drowning

Temptation...
That is what lead me to this place.
This place, where I struggle to keep my head
Above the water.

Five years have past,
Since I jumped from the precipice.
Unknown to me, that I wouldn't be able
To climb back to safety.

He'd tempted me to jump
Without saying a single word.
Silent hopes that he'd help me
Swim back to shore rang in my head.

Finally, I jumped,
And when I hit the cold and icy water,
I knew I had made a mistake.
Helplessly, I grasped for the wall that had kept me from this fate.

Water thrashed about my head,
My legs kicked to keep me from the pull
Of the undertow.
Waves kept me dizzy in the new world I'd entered.

With a sly grin, he swam away,
Leaving me to drown.
Survival instinct kept my legs kicking,
My lungs breathing and my heart beating.

A few have tried to leave me to shore,
To save me from my fate.
But before I get close enough, I lose them
And I'm dragged back out.

Now, I wait for the next passerby,
While I fight for strength to survive.
Maybe next time, I'll make it,
If the tide is right.
