Face Of Death. Poem by Tony Robinson

Face Of Death.

I’ve seen the face of death a thousand times
I’ve been up close I’ve felt its breath
I’ve danced with the devil enough to know
That nowhere inside it is there a soul
I’ve joined the army of degradation
And marched with them enough to know
That’s not a direction I want to go
I’ve been on the road to annihilation
And I’ve learned that it only leaves behind total frustration
I’ve walked hand in hand with confrontation enough to know
That’s not a destination I intend to go
I’ve felt the death of a million babies
And watched ourselves destroy each other nation by nation
To know that all they want is to be left alone
I’ve seen the destruction of a thousand species
And watched our pollution emptied into the sea
I’ve seen human beings shot into space
But were still not wise enough to know that destroying the planet is a futile waste
We are here for such a short time yet so many people forget to smile
The world would be a happier place if we just took care
But all we do is strip it bare
Eventually when you have killed all the things of natural beauty will you care?
Sooner or later it will all be gone, but will you remember what for?
What will you do when you’ve ripped the world to shreds?
Will you sleep peacefully in your baron beds?
When all there is to see is a stony face
What will you leave behind in your place?
Will you one day start to know?
That you should leave nature alone and let it grow
Leave things as they are, bathed in the shadow of a distant star
Just sit back and take a good look
Cause one day soon it will be your last
And the way things are going that day is coming fast.
