Falling Short Of Falling In Love Poem by Maria Luz de Castro

Falling Short Of Falling In Love

You set the stage,
a lovely scene:
a starlit night,
the moon so bright,
a table by the sea,
candlelight, roses,
music for me...

Anticipation swelled
inside of me.
You took my hand,
we glided perfectly.
Breathless, eyes twinkling,
touching, holding,
gently falling...

But the moment
never came.
Words that touched the heart,
so difficult to frame.
Our smiles spoke for us
but all was just
in vain...

So many nights like this
came and went.
We never found the key
to say what we meant.
The sweetness we had,
the laughter we shared
had been slowly spent...

We passed up sadly
what might have been
For us, love was truly
an elusive dream,
Your eyes strayed away
and found other dames to sway.
Alas! ...

You set the stage,
a lovely scene:
a starlit night,
the moon so bright,
a table by the sea,
candlelight, roses,
music... but no, not for me...
