Treasure Island

Father's Love

There is but one love
beyond measure
a love truly unbound
in its depth and purity
an often overlooked
and forgotten treasure
one to which we can find
such sweet security.

I never knew
how deep love could be
until I first looked
upon my new baby born
then with new sight
I began to see
my heart and hopes
were to him forever sworn.

A father
much more than dad he has to be
with my own father’s example
I knew my part
I would stand and fall
to fulfill responsibility
an imperfect man
yet a perfect love in my heart.

In that moment I realized
my own father’s grace
forgiving me of all my
nearsighted sins
always there
holding me with his
sincere embrace
never locking his door
always letting me back in.

Lost in that moment
of a father’s love epiphany
I knew why they used this love
for God’s love’s metaphor
nothing else would serve
as a suitable simile
for in a search of depth of love
nothing was more.

That moment I understood
our Father’s true love
as I contemplated on
Abraham, Isaac
and Moriah’s Hill
a son’s sacrifice in demand
yet stopped from above
As if saying
“This sacrifice not asked of you
but for you I will”.

There is but one love
beyond measure
a love truly unbound
in its depth and purity
an often overlooked
and forgotten treasure
one to which we can find
such sweet security.

poet Alfred Lord Tennyson

It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole
Unequal laws unto a savage race,
