Funeral Plans Poem by Bancroft Boreland

Funeral Plans

On that day
When my heart no longer beats
Sing me love songs in my eternal sleep
On that day
When the door of life finally closes
Lay my body in a coffin made from various roses
On that day
When I am deprived of life
Bury me with portraits of my children and wife
On that day
Please do not close my eyes
Let me see the faces of my loved ones
As my body says goodbye

I will die
I know not when, I know not how
There is no yesterday, no tomorrow, only now
There may be no heaven, no paradise, no after-life
So I cherish this life
And though faith is something I adore
The truth is, of nothing can we be sure
Religion may be true or it may all be a lie
And though we should all be prepared
No one wants to die…
