Glass Tower Poem by Ann Miller

Glass Tower

I built a tower high around my heart
The shiny glass walls holding me far
From those with greedy hands
Trying to take
The heart that isn't theirs.

I dared someone to climb it
To find what was inside
I would give freely
To those brave
The heart that's mine to give.

Some stood around the bottom
Wondering what could be
To be given so sparingly
None found worth in
The heart they couldn't see.

One came through the window
Of the shiny glass tower
To my surprise
And to receive
The heart I gave away.

But when in his hands the heart was held
Back through the window he went
He took the gift
I gave freely
The heart I no longer have.

I looked out the window of the tall tower
To find it not so tall
For when I thought he climbed to me
He really dragged me down
For the heart that wasn't his to keep.

The cold glass was a cool reprieve
To match my missing heart
And broken tower
That could not cut
A heart that wasn't there.

I decided to climb down
Going searching for my heart
I found it in pieces
And pasted together
The scraps of once my heart.

The heart no longer beat just right
I kept it anyway
But locked it in a metal cage
And left it there
The heart I have hidden away.
