Graveyard (There, She Was Standing) Poem by Rijad Islamovic

Graveyard (There, She Was Standing)

Laying on the graveyard
Half dead
Writings on the wall
That I've never read
There, she was standing
In front of a tomb
There, she was praying
To leave this home of doom

I heard the whispers
Of spirits, faded long ago
Screaming in decay
Waiting for the night to fall
The last ray of light
Died within me
I crawl into the darkness
Now, in death, she can join me

Falling leaves
Falling on my grave
Autumns passing by
And covering my way
For the beauty never seen
For her, I still wait
On the graveyard, in the shadows
Forever is never late

In death
She joined me
She proved
That she loves me
In death
We'll be together
Always
And forever

I presume you have been influenced by horror films because there are certain elements that correspond with the iconography of the genre. The threat posed by ‘the writing on the walls’ which you ignored and the portrayal of the girl as an omniscient figure is quite sinister. I thought the writing on the wall was a metaphor linking in with the lack of feelings the girl has for you and how you fail to see this which inhibits the possibility of a relationship. The other images in the poem were interesting, such as: ‘the falling leaves’, which links in with the theme of death therefore obscuring your positive outlook (again linked with the mysterious girl) . The negative connotations with death are subverted here where you write: ‘in death we’ll be together always and forever’- but it will be an uneventful relationship if you don’t believe in the afterlife! !
