Henry Poem by Bryan Taplits

Henry

A tail attached and wagging-
but eyes wary and on high alert,
Henry stood like a praetorian guard
Safeguarding us always-
as always and ever he would.
So small but also big and mighty
eyes glaring, piercing through all foes,
Even though no one was there-he didn't care-
His vigilant bark betokening
That he was ready and always eager to go.

Yes, he was my ally that regretfully wandered off-
As he sniffed for and searched round the bend,
And on that day-where all my memories will now lie-
He sought and he found his sad end….

But I'm sure on some other day we'll both
Meet again, and find in each an old friend.
Comrades still,
each heaven sent
Yes, we'll stroll together once again.
On that day we will banter once more
Me and my pal whom I could always pat and tease,
He matching my stride, he always at my side-
And no more will need that dang leash.
